Weekly Couple Check-In in 15 Minutes: What It Is, Questions and Template

A weekly couple check-in is a short, fixed talk where two partners say how the week felt, name one appreciation, and agree on one small action for next week. Fifteen minutes is enough.

The 15-minute agenda

StepWhat to do
Settle in (2 min)Phones away except for the check-in. Say one thing you are glad about today.
Reflect alone (5 min)Each person writes short answers to the 4 questions below before talking. This keeps the first answer honest.
Talk (5 min)Take turns. One person reads their answers, the other only listens and says what they heard. Then swap.
One promise (3 min)Agree on one small action for the coming week. Write it down where you both see it.

What a check-in is, and what it is not

It is

A repeat habit. Short. Low pressure. A place for appreciation, small needs and one promise.

It is not

A trial, a score, a budget review or a place to solve big problems. Move big topics to a separate planning meeting.

If you want a longer agenda with money, calendar and chores, use the 30-minute couple planning meeting. If you want more prompts, see 50 weekly relationship check-in questions.

12 questions to pick from

Pick four each week. Do not use all twelve.

  1. How did this week feel for you, from 1 to 10? What made it that number?
  2. What did I do this week that you appreciated?
  3. When did you feel most connected to me?
  4. What felt heavier than it needed to?
  5. Where did you feel alone with a task?
  6. What is one small, positive thing that would help you next week?
  7. What are you proud of us for?
  8. What is one thing we should look forward to?
  9. Is there anything unsaid that is small now but could get bigger?
  10. What is one kind thing we can do for each other this week?
  11. Did last week's promise happen? Fully, partly, or not at all?
  12. What should we stop doing, or do less of?

Week of: ____
1. This week felt (1–10): ___ because ___
2. I appreciated that you ___
3. One thing that felt heavier than it needed to: ___
4. One small, positive thing that would help next week: ___
Our one promise for the week: ___
Last week's promise: done / partly / carried forward / no longer matters

Rules that make it last

  1. Same time each week. Put it in your shared calendar so it does not slide.
  2. Answer alone first. Then talk. You avoid copying each other's answer.
  3. Ask for things in a positive way. "Can we walk together on Tuesday?" works better than "You never make time."
  4. One promise only. Small enough to do in seven days.
  5. Skip a week without guilt. Restart the next week. Do not make up for it with a long session.
  6. Park heavy topics. Write "talk later" and pick a time.

How Weekly Sync in Tandem works

Tandem: Couples Organizer has a Weekly Sync built on the same idea. These are the steps in the app today:

  1. You choose a reminder day and time. Each partner gets it in their own local time. You can pick up to five topics, such as connection, teamwork, money or quality time.
  2. If you did a promise last week, the sync starts there: we did it, partly, carry it forward or it no longer matters.
  3. Each partner answers four short steps on their own phone: how the week felt, what they appreciated, one prompt from a topic, and one positive need.
  4. Answers stay private until both partners submit.
  5. You agree on one shared promise for the week.

Weekly Sync needs a paired partner. See the Weekly Sync feature page. Tandem is a tool for everyday communication. It is not therapy.

Frequently asked questions

What is a weekly check-in for couples?

A weekly check-in is a short, fixed time each week when two partners say how the week felt, name one thing they appreciated, and agree on one small action for the next week. It is not a fight, a budget meeting or therapy.

How long should a couples check-in take?

Fifteen minutes is enough for most weeks: 2 minutes to settle in, 5 minutes to reflect, 5 minutes to talk, and 3 minutes to agree on one promise. Keep it short so you will repeat it.

What day is best for a weekly couple check-in?

Pick a calm moment you can repeat, such as Sunday evening or Friday after dinner. Avoid right before bed or right after a stressful event. Consistency matters more than the day.

What should we talk about in a weekly check-in?

Four things: how the week felt, one appreciation, one thing that felt heavier than it needed to, and one small positive request for next week. Leave big money or life decisions for a separate planning meeting.

How does Tandem Weekly Sync work?

Each partner answers four short steps on their own phone: how the week felt, what they appreciated, one prompt from a topic you chose, and one positive need. Answers stay private until both partners submit. You then agree on one shared promise, and next week starts by looking back at how that promise went.

Can a check-in replace couples therapy?

No. A check-in supports everyday communication. It is not clinical care. If a topic keeps causing pain, consider a qualified professional.
